St. Catherine, virgin and martyr, is honored in both the Western and Eastern churches on November 25, the traditional date of her martyrdom in Alexandria, Egypt. Saint Catherine's life and death shows that she was steadfast in the Catholic faith, beautiful, of noble birth, and of high intelligence.

            

During the persecution under Maximinus she sought an interview with the emperor ... this 18-year-old woman is said to have rebuked him for his cruelty and attempted to prove to him the folly of worshipping false gods.

Maximus called in some leading pagan scholars to refute her, hoping that they would induce her to apostatize. The emperor brought in some 50 "philosophers" to dispute her Christian ideas -- but she convinced them all to convert to Christianity, at which point the emperor burned them all to death.

Note: Regarding the text "convert to Christianity", those who embraced the Catholic truths would have had to be baptized in water before being martyred in order to reach the state of justification (sanctified) to have any chance at getting to Heaven. See Section 7.2 of this site.

Furious over his failure, the emperor then had the young woman scourged and imprisoned. His wife, the empress, fascinated by what she had heard of Catherine, went in the company of the emperor's general to visit her in jail. The empress and general were also converted to Christianity. Maximus therefore ordered that Catherine be tortured to death on a spike-studded wheel.

But angels are said to have thrown bolts of lightning so that the wheel broke and the spikes flew off, injuring onlookers but leaving Catherine unharmed ... so the ruler had her beheaded. When she was eventually beheaded, milk, not blood, flowed from her neck, then ...

Her body was transported by Angels to Mount Sinai in Arabia ... where Justinian I (Roman emperor, 1 Aug 527 - 14 Nov 565) built the famous monastery in her honor. In 527 A.D. Greek monks built the monastery of Saint Catherine, this shows that one of the first actions taken by Justinian was this Church built in her honor.

            

Another statement made in the legend of Saint Catherine is that before her death she had a vision of Maria and the Christ child and had received the grace of being accepted by Him as His mystical spouse.

St. Catherine caught the fancy of everyday Christians and from the tenth to the eighteenth century, she was venerated as one of the fourteen most powerful saints (the "Fourteen Holy Helpers"). Saint Catherine was especially popular in France, and she was one of the Saints whose voices were heard by Joan of Arc.

The feast day of Catherine of Alexandria is November 25. The vatican-2 jew-heretic cult which now controls our formerly Catholic properties made it look like the Catholic Church removed her from the Church's official calendar of saints in 1969. The automatically excommunicated heretics of the vatican-2 cult know who they should be attacking.

            

Saint Catherine's feast was observed with solemnity and popular festivities throughout Europe. The popularity of the name "Catherine" (in various spellings) is likely based on Catherine of Alexandria's popularity.

Many of our formerly Catholic Churches (they are now meeting halls for the vatican-2 jew-heretic cult) were named after her; her statue, with the broken wheel as identifying symbol, was found in many Churches. Some of the greatest artists painted her likeness and the events of her life. Because of her wisdom in disputation, theologians invoked her aid. Churchmen sang and preached her praise. Many prayed to her because of the graces she obtained for them through the Blessed Virgin. See Section 48 regarding intercessory prayer.
